Modelling and diagnostics of lithium-ion batteries

Billy Wu, Xinhua Liu

The lifetime of lithium-ion batteries used for grid scale energy storage is highly dependent on how it is used with key operating parameters including charge/discharge rate, temperature and operating state-of-charge. This project aims to develop a physics based model of a lithium-ion battery to quantify the usage driven degradation such that the impact of operating modes can be investigated. This will then be combined with diagnostic techniques to assess the state of the battery in-operando, whereby this information will be used to adjust the operating conditions to improve lifetime.

Objectives

  • Develop an open source physics based lithium-ion battery model which captures degradation effects
  • Develop control algorithms to increase the lifetime of lithium-ion batteries
  • Develop diagnostics to assess battery state-of-health and use this information to inform control algorithms
